Loch Ard Gorge is one of the most dramatic sights along Great Ocean Road. The sheer gorge makes an amazing sight from above, and there are stairs leading down to the beach, where you can enjoy impressive views of the cliffs from below.
These famous limestone structures are a natural marvel – they tower 45m above the ocean, just off the shore along Great Ocean Road. There are only eight left today because the others have collapsed due to erosion, but that hasn’t stopped them from being one of the most photographed sights in Australia. Visit the Twelve Apostles Centre for history on the area before taking the Great Ocean Walk along the coastline. The best time to visit is at sunrise or sunset, when the apostles turn bright yellow and fairy penguins wander out onto the beach.
This amazing natural cliff formation is located in Port Campbell National Park on Great Ocean Road. Though it once resembled a bridge, the main arch connecting the bridge to the main land collapsed years ago. It’s still an impressive sight, especially on a windy day. Upper and lower viewing platforms can be accessed from the London Bridge car park.
Gibsons Steps can be found just a few minutes away from the Twelve Apostles. The stairs were carved into the cliff face by the original Kirrae Whurrong inhabitants, and later by a local settler called Hugh Gibson, who wanted to be able to reach his favourite fishing spot. You should only venture down the steps if conditions are calm – during high tide the waves wash right up to the cliffs.
This offshore park is a very popular diving and snorkelling destination due to its rich marine life. Its underwater network of canyons and caves supports a variety of creatures, including reef fish, seals, lobster and sea urchins.
Port Campbell Bay is a picturesque inlet located in Port Campbell’s centre. It’s one of the safest local beaches for swimming because it’s patrolled by lifesavers during the summer. There is a jetty for fishing, and picnic benches are scattered along the foreshore.
To the west of Port Campbell, you’ll find Two Mile Bay, where the brave surf some of Australia’s highest waves. You can watch them in action from the western edge of the Discovery Walk.
