It’s easy to spend hours wandering this animal sanctuary, where you can get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most beloved wildlife. Kids can hand feed kangaroos, emus, dingoes and deer, and watch farm animals roaming free in the paddocks. The park can be found about twenty-five minutes from Port Campbell, between Lavers Hill and Princetown.
Pick up a treasure map from the Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre and set off on an adventure to Camperdown, where treasure chests have been hidden around the town’s lakes and volcanic craters. Find the loot, don’t let anyone see you, and you could win a prize! You can borrow GPS units, digital cameras and binoculars from the visitor centre.
Deep in the Otway Ranges you can take the famous Treetop Walk, the longest and highest walkway of its kind in the world. Those looking for even more adventure can take the zipline tour, which involves flying along cables from one treetop station to another.
Borrow special equipment (an anemometer) from the Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre and spend an afternoon learning about where the highest wind speeds and coolest temperatures can be found along the Shipwreck Coast.
Flagstaff Hill is a large maritime museum and 1870s historical precinct on Lady Bay in Warrnambool. It houses Australia’s most extensive collection of shipwreck artifacts, including the Minton Loch Ard peacock, a rare piece of art that was recovered from the Loch Ard, valued at $4 million. Wander the village to experience what life would have been like on the docks in the late nineteenth century.
Rent a reflector telescope for free from the Port Campbell Visitor Information Centre to search the skies above Great Ocean Road. Depending on the time of year, you might even glimpse Jupiter or Saturn.
